The Ubiquitus SD Card
As mobile phones have become smart phones, and digital cameras have become Mega-pixel cameras, users are demanding more memory storage in a smaller physical space. An SD Card is a Secure Digital card. It is a non-volatile memory card format for use in portable devices. These Memory Cards are widely used in digital cameras, digital camcorders, handheld computers, netbook computers, PDAs, media players, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video game consoles. Officially, standard SD cards have a maximum capacity of 2 GB, although they can in fact store up to 4 GB High-capacity cards have a maximum capacity of 32 GB. This format is now very popular. Although because of changes to the interface of the established format, some older devices designed for standard SD cards (up to 4 GB) cannot handle newer formats such as SDHC (more than 4 GB). Many consumers are confused by this as SD cards have the same physical shape. A Memory Stick is different from an SD card. Developed in 1998, it is a removable flash memory card. It is about the size and thickness of a piece of chewing gum. It is a portable storage device and means that the user can easily carry data around, without having to lug their laptop everywhere. Finding the right format for your requirements can be a nightmare. One look at the internet, keying in the search terms reveals a plethora of sites selling low price memory in a variety of formats, from SD cards to memory sticks. If you are not sure what you need the best thing is probably to go into a good reputable computer store, and ask. The assistant, if they are any good and not just some spotty teenager, should be able to guide you through size and format so that you walk out with what you need.
